POME is a Locally Appropriate Mitigation Action (LAMA) intended to improve rural electrification.
Activities: (2017 - 2021)
The overall concept supports palm oil companies or other developers in gaining access to reliable techniques and advice from the initial stage of the development process (pre-feasibility study) through the technical, organisational and financial implementation of the power plant up to the sale of electricity to state-owned entreprises.
Expected results are:
- Developers establish POME-to-electricity biogas power plants and demonstrate best practices for other bioenergy projects
- Technical support and financial facilities offer attractive opportunities for sustainable investment
- Baselines for GHG emissions are established and progress measured transparently through an MRV system.
The NAMA focuses on Kalimantan and Sumatra.
The Governor of East Kalimantan has enacted a moratorium on new licenses for oil palm plantation, mining and logging concessions while improvements are made to the permit licensing system. Mitigating emissions from POME involves capturing biogas – more than half of which is methane – and using the methane to generate power (POME-to-electricity).
