he objective of the NAMA is to improve access of sugar mills to the grid.
Activities: (2017 - 2030)
Currently, despite significant excess bagasse resources that are burnt as waste, only a few sugar mills produce power for the grid. The NAMA, through financial engineering targeted at eliminating the financial grid connection barrier, will first raise the 17 identified potentially viable co-generation investments to 43, while significantly increasing the overall investment probability.
It will help establish a non-profit Grid Operating Facility (GOF) to create an equity base of national and international donors upon which loans are raised to finance grid connection investments. These are made financially viable by combining non-profit grid operation, extended loan maturity for grid investment and grouping of adjacent mills on shared connections.
The United Kingdom and Germany have pre-selected 7 NAMA Support Projects, including this NAMA in Mexico, from the NAMA Facility’s 4th Call. These projects will receive funding by Germany and the UK of up to € 60 million to prepare their preparation development phase. Decisions on funding for implementation will be taken after the assessment of these proposals.
